The Office of Institutional Performance and Assessment (IPA) is excited to offer a wide range of resources to support the university in improving student educational outcomes and experiences, institutional support services, and operational efficiency. Our fellow assessment colleagues and practitioners from other institutions are welcome to make use of resources that we authored. We ask that you please cite and give credit when using these materials outside of FSU.

IE Assessment Handbooks

The Handbooks provide a roadmap and specific guidelines for educational programs, administrative and academic/student support services units on how to best demonstrate Institutional Effectiveness (IE) using Program and Student Learning Outcomes. The purpose of the Handbooks is to assist FSU community in strengthening the university culture of evidence and betterment.

IE Portal User Guides

FSU uses a cloud-based application called Nuventive Improvement Platform to document and maintain institutional assessment Plans and Results. The IE Portal User Guides provide step-by-step instructions on how to complete common reporting tasks in the platform.

Mapping Student Learning Outcomes

A curriculum map is a chart that shows in which specific courses various knowledge and skill sets are initially taught, further developed and reinforced, and finally mastered and assessed. Mapping student learning outcomes onto the program curriculum allows for a visual representation of what students are learning, at which points in the curriculum, and how their learning of key content and skills is evidenced.

Annual IE Assessment Reporting Templates

Those who are unfamiliar with or are hesitant to use the Institutional Effectiveness (IE) Portal may utilize the IE Assessment reporting templates to draft and document Outcomes Plans and Results. Once the new content is entered in the templates, they can be shared internally, reviewed, edited, finalized and then sent to the unit’s IE Representative and/or to ipa@fsu.edu to be entered into the IE Portal on the user’s behalf.

IE Assessment Review Rubrics and Feedback Forms

The Review Rubrics articulate expectations regarding the quality of the IE Assessment reports. The Rubrics can be utilized by assessment coordinators and IE Representatives in need of concrete examples and descriptions of high-quality narratives. The Review Rubrics can also be used by the department-level reviewers as a tool allowing for consistent, detailed, clear and improvement-focused evaluation of the Outcomes Results and Plans.

Using Rubrics to Assess Student Learning

There are a number of different methods for assessing Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs); one of the most useful is rubrics. A rubric is an evaluation tool designed to assess multifaceted observable performance by a student on a single assignment using a set of predetermined expectations.
